Redefining Greatness: Lessons from Jesus Washing His Disciples’ Feet

The story of Jesus washing His disciples’ feet in John 13 is one of the most striking examples of servant leadership in the Bible. It’s a scene that forces us to rethink everything we’ve been taught about power and greatness. Picture this: Jesus, fully aware of His divine authority, kneels to do a job typically reserved for the lowest servant. As He moves from one disciple to the next, He isn’t just cleaning dirt from their feet—He’s showing them (and us) what true love and humility look like. ‘Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet’ (John 13:14). With these words, Jesus calls us to a radically different way of living. Greatness isn’t about climbing to the top; it’s about stooping to serve. This isn’t an abstract principle. It’s a call to action. How can we apply this in our daily lives? Maybe it means forgiving someone who’s wronged us. Maybe it’s taking the time to help a neighbor, even when it’s inconvenient. Whatever it looks like, Jesus’ example shows us that service is at the heart of the Christian life. Are we willing to follow His lead? To lay down our pride and take up the towel? It’s not easy, but it’s the path to true greatness—and the way to reflect His love to the world.
